Golf GPS
Golf GPS
Ver 1.8 & 1.9 crashes on iOS < 5.0
Please update Golf GPS to the recent version to fix the problem, or update your iOS to most recent version.
Golf GPS is a simple app. It tells distance to bunkers, water hazards, and pins. Many similar apps require subscription (hopefully no additional cost) , or you need to build your own map ahead of time. While struggling with my terrible iron shot, I got an idea. When you play golf, you see red, white, blue yardage represent 100, 150 and 200 yards respectively from the pin. The idea was why don’t I reverse it on my iPhone screen.
What is it?
This app doesn’t have internal or captured map. It downloads map on the fly, which means you need internet connection to use it. I’m sorry for those who don’t have 3G connection or who are playing far from cell tower.
GPS data is pretty much precise if you give some time to the app. If you just turn on the app, give little time.

Need to talk?
On left side of the top, there is a button you can use to center the map or to active compass view.
Whenever you want to center the map (place your location in the middle of the map), you need to touch this button. The map will be automatically centered when you move certain distance.
Having hard time to find green? You can simple activate compass view (double tap) to match the map with the direction where you are facing. This feature is available only if your device has compass sensor (Magnetometer).
Center Map & Compass View
Do you want to know exact distance to a certain point? No problem. You can add yardages wherever you want.
To add a yardage
- Place the yardage drop pointer (white cross in the middle) where you want to drop a yardage.
- Touch the yardage button on top
To relocate a yardage
- Touch and hold a yardage until it is activated (became blue and lifted)
- Drag it where you want to place and release it
Yardages
Circles
The app puts a blue pin where you are and draws yellow, red, white, blue, black, and orange circles each represents for 50, 100, 150, 200, 250 and 300 yards (or meter depending on your preference).
If you zoom the map into certain level (configurable through settings), you will find 10-yard circles between regular circles, which is helpful to read distance.
These circles should be enough for most players or those who like a simple GPS solution.
Distance from Previous Location (Paid Version Only)
Wonder how far you just hit with a driver? Now you can find out with the app. Just mark the current position and read distance at the left upper corner of the map.
Here’s how in detail.
- Mark current position by touch left upper corner of the map; you will see either “Mark” (if you never mark current position) or distance from the previous location.
- Once you touch the button, the app will drop a red yardage where you are now. This yardage also can be moved just like other regular yardages.
- The app will tell the distance from the saved location.
- You can re-save the current position by touch this distance again when you are ready to measure next shot.
Settings
Use distance unit
- You can use either yard or meter.
Re-center map if location changes
- The map will be automatically re-centered when you are move the distance you set here.
Yardage size & remove button size
- You can change the size of yardage and yardage remove button.
Yardage drop point
- If you set this setting to “Show”, you’ll see white cross in the middle of map where a yardage will drop. It helps you to drop a yardage to where you want it at first place without dragging drop yardage.
Show 10 yard line when zoom to
- The app will draw 10-yard lines if you zoom it within the range you set here. For example, if you set the value 100, the app will draw lines when the map is zoomed around 100 yards.
Map Zoom & Pan
Golf GPS map works very similar like iPhone built-in Map app. To zoom in, you need to double tap or move away two fingers from each other. You can pinch the screen (move closer two fingers to each other) to zoom out. You can also view other location simply by scrolling map just like Map app.
Restart GPS button
- Sometimes, GPS function fails to restart when the app is activated from background mode. I’m still trying to figure it out why it’s happening. Meantime, I put this button so you can restart GPS whenever you have a problem.
- Restart GPS button will be relocated to the front page, and it will be shown when the app is reactivated from background until GPS function starts working.
- Show 10 yard line option was accidentally omitted in free version, and this option will be re-inserted.
- and some enhancement...
What’s on To-do list
Free vs Paid version
To remove a yardage, tab a yardage and touch a red remove button on the right side. You will be asked one more time for deletion.
Those yardages will be stored internally and will be displayed again until you remove it.
Paid version = Free version - Advertisement + One more feature
Golf GPS comes in two versions. Free version is fully functional. There is neither time nor usage limitation. However, the free version shows advertisement at the bottom of the screen.
The other version is paid version which is ad-free. Of course, paid version contains the same functionality that free version has, plus one more function. Paid version will always have one more function. The current paid version has exclusive function that you can find out the distance from previous marked location (simply shot distance). This feature might be included in free version if a new feature is introduced to paid version.
Here’s formula.
Paid version
Free version
- Yardage circles around you (50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300)
- Yardage marks wherever you want to know the distance
- Compass view which rotates maps to match where you are facing
- Support background mode for quick restart
- More yardage circles when zoom closely for accuracy
- Drop a marker where you hit and calculate distance from it (Paid version only)
